Reader Reviews The 1994 Phish tours were pretty amazing (especially the Summer and Fall tours.) This particular show is played in front of a hometown crowd (North Fayston is near Burlington), so you can obviously expect the group to do some unexpected things. The first set holds one surprise in "NO2." Its an interesting ditty trying to replicate the experience of being in the dentist's chair while under the influence of nitrous oxide...as I'm sure you can imagine, its quite odd. Besides that though, we've got a very well played if not "standard" setlist. Tunes like "Down With Disease," "Sample in a Jar," "Cavern," and "Sparkle" are all great, but didn't really elicit excitement from the fans back in 1994 ("Down with Disease" has since become a warhorse looked forward to by all.) Set II is where things start looking up a bit. Right out of the gate its one great jam after another. Tireless favorites like "Antelope," AC/DC Bag," "Harry Hood" and "2001" melt into one another in a frenzied jam. Also included are the rare fan favorites "Harpua" and "Contact." This particular "Harpua" is quite entertaining in that a comet crashes into Jupiter. Despite the unruly and vigorous second set, the show gets four stars out of five because I know they can do much better (and I've seen them do much better several times in person as well as having heard other shows I didn't attend on tape.) Additionally when you listen to this show next to other shows in the series, it just doesn't stack up. Don't get me wrong, its really good (hence the four stars) and I listen to it all the time, but when compared to LIVE PHISH 4: Fukuoka, Japan and LIVE PHISH 6: Worcester, Massachusetts this one's flaws are more apparent. The jamming on the later discs is so much more mature. I do love the reckless abandon they approach these earlier shows with though, its all guts and big guitar. Finally, I don't care what they release in this series, I'm going to by it. I'd give this four and a half if I could, but since I can't it gets a four.
