BABY The New Musical
Reader Reviews
This review is from: Baby (1983 Original Broadway Cast) (Audio CD)
I love some of the music of Maltby and Shire. CLOSER THAN EVER, a revue of theirs which grew out of music discarded from BABY, is one of my most favorite shows. However, BABY is not in the same league. I've never seen the show, and I've never read the script, but I know the show is about three couples each expecting a child: two unmarried college students (Callaway and Graff), a thirty-something couple who've been trying to conceive (Cox and Vidnovic), and an unsuspecting pair of empty-nesters (Fowler and Congdon). The premise sounds good enough, and some of the songs deliver. "We Start Today," "Baby, Baby, Baby," "I Chose Right," "The Ladies Singing Their Song," and "Two People in Love" are all fine. "I Want It All" and "The Story Goes On" are gems that deserve to be better known. Unfortunately, the other songs seem flat, but I think that is due to the delivery of this mostly mediocre cast. Callaway is the true stand-out talent, but even her voice had not yet developed its sparkle of her more recent work. (Her recording of "The Story Goes On" on a CD by the same title is far superior to the one on this CD.) Graff is also fine, although it is his acting ability and exuberance, not his singing, that carry him through. "Patterns," sung here by Fowler, is blase compared to Lynne Winterstellar's version in CLOSER THAN EVER. "Romance" and its two reprises are probably very funny, but Cox and Vidnovic lack the skills to pull them off. This is a pleasant CD, but it is by no means a "must have."
