If there is a narrative thread to the eclectic art/punk mosaic that constitutes Pere Ubu, it is the vocal musings of legendary front man David Thomas. Throughout the long history of the band from its proto-rise out of the back water industrial malaise of Cleveland Ohio in the mid seventies to later incarnations that included avante garde luminaries like Chris Cutler and Captain Beefhart refuge Eric Drew Feldman, Thomas has formed a synaptic core that drives the bands creative peregrinations. Now Morphius records, in conjunction with Hearthan are proud to release a true document of Thomas genius as an extemporaneous performer and inventive vocalist One Man Drives While The Other Man Screams. Originally released on Rough Trade records in 1989, the disc features high quality live recordings spanning the bands prodigious period from 1978 through 1981, including sets at the infamous Electric Ballroom in London, England, the legendary mistake in Cleveland and the University of Heidelberg. Thomas performance drives the record, an outer limits via aerialist sweep of vocalizing g that All Music Guide called "positively manic". Burning through Ubu classics like Dub Housing and Codex, Thomas adds spontaneously sweeping arrangements to now classic material as the band sticks to the loose but aggregate teleology that characterizes Pere Ubu at its best. Rounded out with quality cuts like Caligaris Mirror and Ubu Dance party, this record co-mingles all the vibrant colors of the Ubu legendary creativity with the over arching brush strokes of David Thomas performance artist turned rock vocalist, a rich and textured sonic dairy of a genius.
