Disclaimer: Owner of all 72 official PJ bootlegs. This bootleg from Phoenix presents a rather unfortunate show that could have been a real killer, but several things just weren't going right. There were some technical problems that weren't the band's fault, and they are painfully obvious on these discs. Mike McCready is having serious problems with keeping his guitar in tune, which makes a mess of his solos in "Dissident" and "Even Flow." In his showcase outro to "Yellow Ledbetter," he jams on Van Halen's "Ain't Talking Bout Love" but can't quite pull it off with an out-of-tune guitar. Meanwhile, Stone Gossard's amp cuts out in the middle of several songs, especially in "Grievance" and "Do the Evolution" which both require intricate interplay between Stone and Mike, and hence sound terrible tonight. On the good side, there is an incredible jam session in "Rearviewmirror" which is dark and sinister, and there are fine renditions of the opener "Long Road" and "Elderly Woman Behind the Counter." Eddie Vedder delivers a very good vocal performance tonight, especially in "Given to Fly" and "Betterman" where he belts out a note after the last chorus which he holds for a good twenty seconds. The enthusiastic crowd sings along with every word of that song. Eddie's joke this evening is that they only added Phoenix to the tour because they wanted some sun, but they somehow brought lousy Seattle weather with them! Unfortunately, even though this show comes close, technical problems prevent this bootleg from being a real winner.
