Reader Reviews
Disclaimer: Owner of all 72 official PJ bootlegs. This entry in the Pearl Jam bootleg series has the advantage of an enthusiastic crowd and a warm, inviting atmosphere. Eddie Vedder mentions the fun of playing someplace that is surrounded by tumbleweeds rather than factories, and the small town crowd in Lubbock, Texas is overjoyed to be rocked by the band. A caravan like this may not roll into town too often. This is a solid but not overly flashy performance by the band. Instead of slowly building the tension like they do at most shows, the bands jumps straight into the rockers tonight. Pink Floyd's "Interstellar Overdrive" is listed as the opener, but they only doodle on the riff for about nineteen seconds before launching into the inevitable and dependable "Corduroy." The extra-heavy rockers "MFC," "Gods' Dice" and "Animal" appear effectively early in the set, while "Dissident" and "In Hiding" make surprise appearances. This set has one of the best versions of "Daughter" in the third leg of the tour, with an even longer and more emotional free-for-all session to end the song. I've never thought that "Lukin" was a very useful song (too short to make a point), but the way the band uses it here to introduce "Not For You" is brilliant. In a possible recording error, Stone Gossard is barely audible for much of the first disc of this bootleg, but this problem was apparently fixed by the middle of the show. This gig starts to get tired and sluggish during the encore, but the camaraderie between band and audience easily overcomes these problems. In a special bonus, Pearl Jam perform a cover of Buddy Holly's jaunty "Everyday" to pay tribute to this local hero. PJ's knowledge of and respect for rock history is one of their greatest strengths. However, I wonder how many of the youngsters in the audience missed the connection, and don't even know that they're from the same town as that rock n' roll legend.
