Disclaimer: Owner of all 72 official PJ bootlegs. Of the two bootlegs from Houston, this one is the lesser of the two. The following night's show is much better. This gig starts out reasonably well with the effective opener "Long Road," while the heavy rockers "Whipping" and "Hail Hail" ignite the early part of the set. But starting with "Dissident," in which Mike McCready bungles his solos, this performance is damaged by a rash of miscues and poorly tuned guitars. The absolute low point of the concert is a hideous take on "Mankind." First, there is a false start that the band jokes about, as if they were just playing around. But they still can't pull the song off, as Mike and Stone Gossard are out of sync and the track ends in utter confusion. They should be embarrassed by that little episode. Things improve a little with a powerful "Porch" to close the first set, while the encore lights up with "Last Exit," "State of Love and Trust," and a later-than-usual "Even Flow." Eddie Vedder cracks up the crowd with the "Improv" tune, which rags on the two George Bushes. By releasing all 72 shows from the tour on disc, warts and all, Pearl Jam have really shown the world that they're human and have a love for the fans. Each show was probably amazing for folks who attended just that one, but collectors of this series will find that some bootlegs just have to be below average.
