Disclaimer: Owner of all 72 official PJ bootlegs. As a collector of all of these crazy Pearl Jam bootlegs, I have found that many of them are so great, and a few are so bad, that you have tons of things to say about them. This performance in Kansas City is a good, competent performance, and is a little better than the tour average (when you look at the whole series overall), but there's not really much to say about this one. There are a few goodies in the set list, like "Release" which is always an effective opener, a dark and mysterious "Sleight of Hand," and the long-lost B-side "U." Mike McCready lights up "Nothing As It Seems" and "Even Flow" with more intense solos than usual (he can still crank 'em out after all these years), while the couplet "Untitled" and "MFC" makes an unusually late appearance in the encore to good effect. Eddie Vedder forgets significant chunks of lyrics in "Jeremy" and "Rearviewmirror" but he is saved in both cases by the band's strong performances in those songs, plus the helpful crowd. Eddie isn't too talkative tonight, but he does make a quip about the then-current Napster controversy, claiming that Napster was the only place to get a copy of "U." Of course, that's where Pearl Jam got their only copy.
