Graham Parker's ANOTHER GREY AREA is a must-have just for the CD bonus track "Mercury Poisoning," a 1979 song previously released to radio stations only. That is, unless you wish to purchase his 1976-91 anthology PASSION IS NO ORDINARY WORD, the other GP release that I know has that song. As for the original (1981) ANOTHER GREY AREA tunes, about half range from good to excellent. In the right mood, I enjoy the album for its radio-friendly sound. Otherwise, I program the CD for "Mercury Poisoning, "You Hit The Spot," "Fear Not," Temporary Beauty," "Big Fat Zero," "Thankless Task" and the title track. Rock radio was alive and well in the 1980s, and not surprisingly that decade saw Graham Parker's greatest commercial success. ANOTHER GREY AREA's "You Hit The Spot" and "Temporary Beauty" made the airwaves back then, not that you will hear them on today's classic rocks-in-their-heads stations. After all, we have to hear "Love Her Madly" a hundred times a week, don't we? Parker himself recently named ANOTHER GREY AREA as tied (with STEADY NERVES) for his "least favorite" Graham Parker album. Nonetheless, GP at his least impressive is still worth a listen. I could say more but the classic rock station is playing "Love Her Madly." If I don't listen to it now, I will have to wait another hour until they play it again.
