I've been a Pedro the Lion fan for many years, so I was bound to like this album a lot to begin with. I suppose that tarnishes any objectivity that I have, but I still have to include this album in my top ten. The album tells the story of an unfaithful husband and a resentful wife and culminates in the murder of the husband by the wife. The story is quite sad, but it resonates home to just about any listener. The opening song, options, already shows the breaking down of the relationship and the following infidelity on track two (Rapture) gives us a voyeouristic view of the affair. The listener is given a bird's eye view of the entire situation - seeing it from both the husband's and the wife's and ultimately a third party seeing the situation from afar. The lyrics aren't just emotional and moving, they're also very well crafted. The opening verse in "magazine" is simply a fantastic wordplay that goes from a very broad principle to a very specific situation. This song was definitely a standout on the album the first few times I listened to it.Musically the album doesn't seem to be anything new or different, but it is definitely solid and enjoyable. Bazan's singing definitely stands out on the song "Second Best" (which, coincidentally, is my second favorite song on the album...) and the song seems to be taking Bazan's voice to another level - beyond his standard fare. I feel no guilt in giving this album my full 5 stars and I heartily recommend it to anyone. The storytelling and the music is fantastic. If you like Pedro the Lion, I also recommend listening to Roadside Monument (with Jonathan Ford - formerly of Pedro the Lion), Damion Jurado (past collaborator), and Chris Staples solo work (of twothirtyeight).

This is the first Pedro the Lion album that i heard, and i was very skeptical at first. I found it too slow, and almost depressing. But as i listened to it, i guess i began to understand what they were about and became extremely intrigued. Now they are among one of my favorite new "rock" bands and i own everything they have put out. But i would never have gotten into them without this album. This album was the most easily accessable album of theirs, and needed to fully understand them. So if you have any interest in this band, this is a must have.

Dave Bazan is in a tough place; after two successful full lengths, he's got one foot in the Christian scene and the other in the Indie. Rather than choose one over the other, he has decided to create a third album of formidable magnitude, ranging in breadth from nice and easy to brutally gritty. Many may know Pedro from their darker, more lugubrious days. Well, that foundation has not been forgot. Rather the band has forged ahead broadening their sound to include distortion pedals, wailing guitars, heavy rhythms and lyric lines that are served each time, wet and dripping with feeling. As a poet, Bazan is at his most daring, blasting through ten cynical songs challenging marital relationships, corporate servitude and a number of sardonic positions on sex. With this newfound boldness, Dave may find one foot slipping on an unsure surface while the other gaining a greater interest as his unadulterated pursuit continues to flourish.

I'm only writing this review because I don't agree with the most recent.

Most Pedro the Lion fans I know say Control is their favorite. It's a great one to start with.

As i read through the reveiws, I see a lot of people that are dissapointed in 'control.' Personally I like it, my favorite song right now is "second best" track 8. I couldn't believe that nobody else even mentioned this song earlier.

I have to say how pleased I am with this album. I am completely addicted to it. I love every song on here. I think this is PTL's finest work.

Is it depressing? I suppose. I suppose it is, if you consider dark, thoughtful material to be depressing. I don't think it is. I don't know that taking a look at the dark side of humanity is necessarily immoral, depressing, or what have you.

The level of despair, confusion, and sickness might disturb you - if so, I say good. A job well done. Why should every piece of music be a toothpaste jingle? I understand that modern people, Americans in particular, have never really developed a taste for tragedy, but that's something I'll never understand.

This is simply art. Buy this album.
