This album is one of a kind. The only other instantly magical musical experience I ever had like it was XTC's Skylarking, and the opening tracks on REM's Reckoning. This album is absurd, gentle, existential, but never dull. The only possible letdown to anyone would be the operatic male vocals on "Open the Kingdom"--but they work. You will find yourself loving songs performed in styles you might avoid. From the opening ode to a refrigerator's hum evoking old times, to the majestic final notes, this is one of the finest albums I have ever heard. If you have "artistic" tendencies, hear this, hear this, hear this. The melody could sell it to anyone! Big but should have been huge. Glass and co. were even on Saturday Night Live. "Lightning" flat-out rocks with a techno-chill few rock-pop bands could pull off. I heard this in '88 and it gave me new ideas about the potential of art in the mainstream. And one last thing--this is a wonderfully upbeat record, even the slower, musing-on-existence tracks. It will cheer and mystify you!
