Reader Reviews I have been wanting this CD for months now, but always thought it a little pricey for music recorded between 1945-50. But recently I found it at a bargain rate, and I grabbed quick. Glad I did. What you have here are 56 minutes of Charlie Parker playing pop standards in slow to mid-tempo. Beautiful sounds, but not "background music" or "easy listening." It's smooth jazz, but in the '40's meaning of the term, not the current meaning. Some of the 16 selections are from radio broadcasts, some from 78-rpm masters, but the cleaned up sound is pretty darn wonderful. Joining CP are people you never heard of, with funny names: Dizzy Gillespie, Miles Davis, Cozy Cole, Curley Russell, Erroll Garner, Max Roach, J.J. Johnson, and Milt Jackson, among others. There are two vocal tracks, one by Sarah Vaughn and one by Earl Coleman. Both are great. Just about the entire disc is great. This is my second Parker purchase. My other one is the "Timeless Charlie Parker" also on Savoy. That one shows off his bebop furious uptempo bad self and is also worth owning. But for someone new to jazz, or to Parker, perhaps this would be the better initiation. This comes in a cardboard trifold package with a nice booklet and some nice photos of the man himself, and his horn. It's better than I expected, and probably worth the full retail price for any jazz lover.
