...is probably the strongest thing this compilation has going for it. Honestly, if someone nobody had ever heard of made a CD with this tracklisting, almost everyone here would be hesitant to buy it. Most people here that buy it, buy it for two reasons: 1: It's got Oakenfold and Perfecto written on it. 2: We know Oakenfold can mix like nobody's buisness. While I'm not going to deny, I enjoyed this CD quite a bit, it still didn't quite do it for me. I felt like there was something lacking, maybe it was too little energy, or perhaps a bit too much? Whatever it was, this compilation is a good album...but not quite on with the Oakenfold I got to know all those years ago. But everything changes, my musical style changed, as did Paul's, and perhaps now my taste differs so greatly with his that I think he's lacking. Perhaps I am the one that is lacking? Whatever the case, I couldn't bring myself to give this a 5...it barely got a 4, actually. If it wasn't for the Junkie XL remix of Dirty Sticky Floors, and the flawless mixing, this would no doubt be a 3...or lower.
What an amazing compilation of trance(?) My first impression would be to call it trance because the mixes are so beautiful. But there is so much depth here that it really falls into something much more progressive. This music will grow on you and before you know it, 3 months will pass and you'll still be discovering another great track. You'll find big sound, crisp rythms, celestial melodies, and dark mind-bending bass.
If for one reason Oakenfold is a pioneer then that is that he is not afraid to experiment. That has lead him in a few bumps on the road. However this album is far from a bump. More like a classic smooth house collection. Big mid tempo beats that fit better in indoor spaces. As with all compilations who want to become classics a good step would be not to focus on individual songs. Still, one cannot neglect that Great Wall features the best mix of Motorcycle's As The Rush Comes, Deepsky's fantastic mix on Oakie's Hypnotised and another fantastic mix on Dave Gahan's Dirty Sticky Floors. I have no problem whatsoever with Cry Me A River. In fact it fits in just perfect! I would agree with other reviews that the new release by Perfecto (The Club) was a mediocre work and should never have reached the stores. But Great Wall is a whole different story. It gave me fantastic times during the 2003-2004 winter and now some one and a half year later I can't but recommend it! A winter mix classic!
I cant believe reviewers could be so wrong. This is what Oakenfold is about. Its too bad that the people that listen to oakenfold are lame. Yes some of his new releases suck. Not this one. Not only that one listener complained about Justin Timberlake but I can't seem to find that song on this album. What a surprise people are just complaining to complain and have no legitimate complaint. Hey Oakey the club sucked but this and Creamfields were top grade. You have created some of the weakest fan base imaginable, and granted I'm a fair day listener when it comes to any music. Hey this album is fair day material. A-.
