The Host Of Seraphim by Dead Can Dance blares through the speakers, warming the pinnacle of disk-one's climatic entrance. Then, shortly after a "Majestic" reprieve from female singing, Led Zepplin rocks the house with trance as its background. If that's not eclectic enough than I don't what is--. The major problem with a lot of techno these days are the repetitive atmospheres that claim to be original and new. Bah! Do you know how many times I hear the same old same old in terms of sound? It gets quite annoying at times and very unappealing to its uninventfulness. Paul, however, is an exception to this complaint. He seems to reinvent himself with each new release, blessing his listeners with something fresh and flat-out marvelous. And if anybody thinks that this is unoriginal and frankly "boring," than they need to open their minds more to change. The consistant breaks of New Age-type songs are a blissful relief to the constant pounding of the grandious synth lines & groove beats conjured by Oakey, proving techno to be much more than just obnoxious noise. It can also provide you with a source of meditation and emotion, as portrayed here in such tunes as Song To The Siren by Sabel (as heard on a perfume commercial), Rachel's Song by Vangelis, and Sanvean by Dead Can Dance. I think it's a perfect blend of two genres weaving naturally into one colorful hue. And I have to agree with an earlier reviewer who pointed out that Oakey's intent of Perfecto Radio was not made for the purpose of dance clubs but moreso for the reason to produce something to groove to at home without wishing you were raving instead. P.S. Both cds are excellent but the 2nd is slightly better. And the last song - The Silence 2000 by Delerium is meant to be played very, very loud! Don't delay on buying "Perfecto Presents Another World" for Oakey triumphs once again. I hope my review helped. Did it?
Now, when I first heard that Oakey had included a slew of Dead Can Dance and Vangelis tracks on this particular CD, I was intrigued. Had he remixed them? That was the only possible explanation because otherwise (given their positions within the mix) they would completely halt any and all momentum. And wouldn't you know, that's exactly what happened?Granted, it's still a rather gutsy maneuver to veer so far into left field and mess with the expected format. Unfortunately, other than a headache, this CD really didn't have anything new to offer. Certainly there were a few choice tunes to be found on this mix, but any value they might have had was completely lost by the fact that Oakenfold seems to have staunchly refused to mix them. Sure, a few tracks got beatmatched here and there, but then he would bring the tempo to a grinding halt, to get all "deep" on us with a touch of Vangelis or Dead Can Dance. Consequently, there really isn't anyway to tell how Oakenfold would go from something like Tone Depth's "Majestic" into amoebaassassin's "Piledriver."And as an added annoyance -- please, no one wants to hear sample after wanky sample of tottering, all-too-wealthy club goers flying from London to New York "especially for tonight" or any of the other (...) that breaks up the music. "The music building gradually, it gradually builds..." Yes honey, we know.Overall, "Another World" missed its mark by miles. Fortunately, Oakenfold very nearly redeems himself with the "Travelling" mix (of Australian release) which contains many of the same tracks but without the wanky nod to Vangelis or the self-referential samples (well... except for that on burst). So if you feel the itch to purchase this, do yourself a favor and pick up "Travelling" instead -- more music, more longevity. (But probably not much more.)
If you are an Oakenfold fan, you MUST purchase Perfecto Presents Another World. This by far the best compilation he has done and is one of my absolute favorite CDs of all time. Every Oakenfold or even techno/dance/electronica fan should own it!
The transition of songs could not be better. The selection of pieces is fantastic, right down to Delerium and the end of the second CD. If you have never bought anythgin by Paul Oakenfold before, this is the one to start off with - you will not be disappointed. This is how I got hooked on his collections - which I now own 11 of! :-)
I had read that this was one of the best Oakenfold albums and soon discovered that what I read was the truth and nothing but the truth! This double album is filled with amazements! The hardest working DJ in the world did a fabulous job with Another World. My favorite tunes from this 2 CD set are Piledriver by Amoebaassassin, Song to the Siren by Lost Witness, and the amazing and dramatic intro song called The Host of Saraphim by Dead Can Dance. If you are a techno fan this is a must have! Thank you Paul Oakenfold! This is a masterpiece. So, get out there and take a voyage into Another World.
I am a big fan of Paul Oakenfold and have listened to many of his mixes and most of them are really good, but P.P. disc 2 I find myself listening to over and over again. I probably have about 20 of oakie's mixes on disc, but this one gets played probably as much as the rest combined, it has a very nice flow from track to track and good changes of pace within the mix itself where it gives you kind of that relaxed but energized at the same time feeling, highly recommended.
I don't like disc 1 quite as much, but still feel it is pretty good and would definitely rate in the top 5 Oakie mixes with disc 2 obviously being number 1, together they are a really great collection, others at the top of my list include: Live @ Delta Heavy tour - Miami, Essential mix Ibiza and Bunkka.
