It's funny how things happen when you least expect them to, I was in one of the small independant music shops here in london and as Im looking through the various hip hop albums I come across right down near the floor on the bottom shelf a group called Orishas, on the plastic cover it said hip hop cuban and then the rest of the text was in french, the title of the album was A lo cubano and I stared at the cd case for a little while wondering why the album was in french and spanish and whether I should take a chance and purchase it, I eventually decided to buy it mainly because I was intrigued but also because they were selling it quite cheaply. When I got home I put the cd in my system not knowing what to expect and...well lets just say I could not believe how amazing it was I had never heard my native latin sounds so well intergrated with hip hop, I called my friend up and just started playing the tracks represent and a lo cubano down the phone to him, he was equally impressed and we have both been big fans ever since. The Mc's rhyme consistently and about important and relevant subjects not the usual sh*t we here from mainstream rappers today, I say mainstream because this album does not have an underground sound to it but the lyrics for the most part are socially aware, for those that don't understand spanish while you won't be able to appreciate it fully you will still be singing along and nodding your head because one thing this album has a lot of is catchy hooks, it even sounds heavy when they flip it in french a few times although they don't do it often. A must have for fans of latin hip hop and just good music generally, this will one day be hailed as a classic and Orishas deserves to go far. Oh and just so you all know, they performed here in england and yes they are fantastic live if you have the opportunity to see them don't pass it up you won't regret it.
