A Mixed Bag, September 22, 2004
When Olivia first released this album I was pretty disappointed in it. I only liked three songs. Now, as the album and I have gotten older, I like most of the songs. The title hit is a great slow burner and should have been a bigger hit. "Culture Shock" would have made a better single than "Toughen Up" not to mention a great concept video. Soul Kiss the album is worth a look just to see an experiment that lovely Livvy tried in 1985.

A drum-machine relic from 1985...talk about culture shock!, September 4, 2005
Olivia attempted to grow and move on from her faux-country roots and "Grease"/"Physical" triumphs, but friend and producer John Farrar may be the one most responsible for turning Livvy onto this path: a post-disco diva competing (intentionally or not) with Missing Persons and the Motels. It's a gambit that doesn't work overall, though with a slick production and fairly confident vocals, there are compensations. "Soul Kiss" is really the only track that hooks you right away(and is well orchestrated to boot), but the others may take some time. "Toughen Up" is a middling opener, "Culture Shock" has a racy theme but a herky-jerky tempo, but "Queen of the Publication" stays wild and woolly without losing ONJ in the mix (she sounds like she believes in it). The only other song worth mentioning is the ballad, "Emotional Tangle", and Olivia sounds downright relieved with the lower key. The album is propulsive and hopes to be sexy and fiery, but this isn't Newton-John's forte, and the deeper she's pushed into being a wicked belter, the less hip the whole idea becomes.

A Case of Criminal Neglect, October 14, 2005
Out of Olivia's 3 career phases (heartbroken country girl, wholesome teen icon, and sexy, mature woman), I prefer the last one. This album is a product of that period, and it is superb. I know that many found it to be too eclectic, or too sex-propelled, or too much of an attempt to compete with her contemporaries, but I never tire of listening to it, because Olivia's talent makes even the oddest songs work. Highlights for me are "Toughen Up" (great upbeat opener), "Soul Kiss" (just imagine Olivia getting down on her knees, that's all I'm saying), "Overnight Observation" (clever lyrics, humorously sexy delivery) and "The Right Moment" (motivational message beautifully executed). I guess Olivia's time had passed by 1985, so the album wasn't a great success, but to me, ignoring it was criminal neglect.

gret follow up to physical and with same producer, December 20, 2004
this album was gem of the 80s that had little or no publicity and what great tracks - with the John Farrar the writer of her big hits, the writers of physical and other songs - with a cover of "the right moment". If you loved Physical - then you will love this. this should have been remastered with the extra tracks as the Soul kiss - extended remix and dub mix - toughen up - extended remixes and dub mixes and also the extra track "electric". There was a video collection released for this with live performances of "emotional tangle", the right moment", "culture shock", and proper videos of "soul kiss" and "toughen up". it is time this CD got the respect it should have had in the beginning.

Olivia's finest album, December 8, 2004
So much noise was made about the cover of this album, about the lyrical content, about the raunchy image that she was trying to project, that very little has ever been said about the music. Which is a shame, really, because "Soul Kiss" is Olivia's best album, bottom line.It is an elegant, nervous and sleek collection of pop songs, and it's a little more upbeat that many of her other albums. It is a perfect time capsule of what the mid-80's had to offer, for better or worse. Songs like "Moth to a flame", "Overnight observation" and "Culture shock" were graced by funky arrangements that made them arresting and unique, while the title track and "Toughen Up" were fine contemporary R&B pop songs. The ballads were fantastic too, with "The Right Moment" closing the album on a highly emotional note. And it has to be said that Olivia's vocals were at their most versatile on this album, going from pop and rock to retro-styled ballads and funk.Yes, of course, the album talks about such touchy topics as love triangles and oral sex. What is seldom said is that it also talks about personal empowerment ("Toughen up"), commitment ("Emotional tangle") and making choices in life ("The right moment"). It also has a couple of interesting narratives ("Queen of the publication", "Overnight observation", "Driving music"). So never mind the prudes and give this fine album the chance it deserves.

Needs a second chance!, October 22, 2003
Reviewer: A music fan This is one of those albums that, the first time I turned it on, it was a great dissappointment. A couple of months later, for some reason, I got some of the songs stuck in my head after listening to it off and on for several months. It is one of those that, when you first hear it, you hate it, but then you gradually start to like it. I f this is one of those albums that you had kind of pushed to the side, why don't you try it out again. Besides, it has some great tracks. The song, "Toughen up" is my favorite. I also like the title track, "Soul Kiss" very much. There is a very eighties feel to this, so, give it a second chance! Olivia sound great on this! One of her best.
