When I first saw this recording, I couldn't believe that all the songs by Merle Haggard that I enjoyed growing up were together on this one package. It's the kind of thing where you remember what you were doing when you first heard a song.... well, many of the titles on this collection brought back those kinds of memorys, so I bought the CD. However, I have to say that I was disappointed when I put it in the CD player because none of the 20 tracks in this collection were the original recordings. Merle's voice is much more rough here than on the originals, and it sounds as if the band was trying too hard to make the songs sound like the originals: It just didn't work. This is a good CD: Don't get me wrong. All the great hits of the 1960's and 70's are here (Fightin' Side Of Me, Sing Me Back Home, Branded Man... etc), but for someone who remembers what Haggard sounded like in the 1960's and 70's, it would be better to spend a little more money and get the original recordings on another CD set. Two new touches that I liked: Sing Me Back Home has a trumpet part at the end (not in the original recording), and we finally get a studio recording of Everybody's Had The Blues (up to this time, it was only available in a live recording).
