The Geto Boys (Bushwick Bill, Scarface, Willie D) return with their latest offering "The Foundation" (2005). At fifteen tracks long (including intro/outro) this is a relatively short release. GB start the album off strong, getting grimy on "Declaration of War". This is followed up by the albums lead single the banging "Yes Yes Y'all" which all three members shining. Another standout has the Geto Boys lighting up "When It Gets Gangsta" with some thugged out lyrics. The Geto Boys take things to another level with the outstanding "I Tried", a sentimental track, which have the trio analyzing life, and the struggles they have gone through. My favorite track at the moment is "G Code", love the beat and lyrics to this cut. More reflection follows on the laidback "Leaning on You" a track which have the Geto Boys opening up, giving praise to god with the end result being another impressive track. More grimy tales follow on cuts like "Nothin' to Show" and "Real N**** S***". "In The End" The Geto Boys recommend the secret of winning is to find a way out of the game. Bushwick Bill does well on solo with "Dirty B****", telling a story of love and betrayal. I can honestly say I am really happy to see the Geto Boys back at it, "The Foundation" is a definite pickup for fans of the group.
I promised myself that I would stop buying gangster themed misogynistic rap music beginning in 2005. However, I couldn't help from picking up the Geto Boys latest offering, if for no other reason than the historical value. After all, it was the combination of Mr. Scarface, Willie D., and Bushwick Bill who would completely shock the music industry with their 1995 self-titled album. I recall reading about them in my hometown months before they gained rotation on local radio stations. The general consensus among critics was that they were the vilest sociopaths to ever make music. However, in between the cursing and violence the three did maintain a rather appealing talent, and they certainly influenced the rap industry for better or worse. Now ten years since they first combined to attack the music scene, they present what may be a farewell album. While the three have certainly matured over the years, they remain thugs at heart with no plans for going down without a shootout. I must admit that my opinion of the Geto Boys is prejudiced by my personal view that Scarface is one of the top five all-time greatest rappers since the inception of commercially distributed hip-hop. He is nothing short of an extraordinary and brilliant story teller. While Bushwick and Willie D. tend to provide rather predictable stories of how tough they are; `Face prefers to take occasion in vividly explaining the reasons for why. His vocal inflections alone make his most thugged-out verses sound soulful. In fairness, Bushwick and Willie D. elevate their story telling skills to keep pace with `Face on the sentimental "I Tried"; the spiritual "Leaning on You; and the braggadocios "1, 2, the 3." Each group member has a solo cut. Bill with his paranoid and psychopathic "Dirty B@!th." Willie D. with "Nothin 2 Show", which is an insightful and brooding view of the struggles in the `hood. `Face with the "G Code", which should be a study tool in our nation's major universities under Street Rules 101. Collectively, the Geto Boys present a well-thought fabulously produced album that can serve as a teaching tool for the new breed of gangster rappers and street hustlers. Ten years ago the Boys were full of rage and urgency. As expressed best in "The Secret", they are now wise and careful. Alas, old gangsters never die, they just find better hideouts.
The Geto Boys are back. This time maybe for the last time. The Foundation starts off with an intro with J. Prince. It is then followed by a good song Declaration of War. The single Yes Yes Ya'll is pretty bangin track. Other good songs include G Code, Real N----a S--t, and the best track Dirty B----h. This album was not as good as I expected with some tracks that I skip over. There are no real hardcore tracks except the last song, where Bushwick Bill disses his ex-girl. I still recommend you get this album for the good tracks on it.
This was an outstanding come back by a group of undisputed legends. The Geto Boys are one of the best rap groups ever. This is straight street from start to finish. No club bangers, no pop, no radio friendly stuff. Just hardcore rawness through out. This is defintely one of the best rap albums of the year and it will be high on my top ten list
