Reader Reviews Much in the tradition of the jazz guitar giants Jim Hall and Pat Martino, Garrison Fewell's "Are You Afraid of the Dark?" album is a great addition to any jazz guitar fan's CD collection. Garrison's playing is very passionate with masterful subtleties. He has a wonderful sense of restraint and musicality that is evident on every track of the album. He is not a flashy player, but he shows enough of his chops to keep those of you who need some fire for your ears intrigued. The lineup consists of Cecil McBee (bass), Laszlo Gardony (piano) and Matt Wilson (drums). For the most part, this CD is pretty straight ahead. "Journey to the East" offers a little "Eastern" experimentation to the listener, and "Alto Blues" is a nice down home jazz/blues where Garrison shows his musical roots. My favorite cut is the last track on the album, "The Tower of Kazimierz", which he does alone as a beautiful chord solo. Not to be forgotten is the compositional aspect of this album. All of the tunes except for "Statue" and "Song of Her" were written by Garrison. "Homage a Ravel" is a gorgeous introduction to a swinging 3/4 piece entitled "Crossing the Border", which turns into a funk/groove in the outro. You can tell these guys are just having fun!
