Rockin the Funky Socialist agenda ...and making it seem cool, August 24, 2004
Let's see... We need to make an album full of angular, choppy brittle, minimalist funk that would make George Clinton and Bootsy Collins want to sell all of their worldly possessions and move to a socialist co-op where they can study the works of Karl Marx while shaking their rumps to a devastating groove. That's not an easy task to accomplish. But Gang of Four did it. This album is a political manifesto that you can dance to. Their targets are capitalist society, corporate greed, consumerism as identity, the loss of self in a pre-fabricated corporate environment. Their message is even more relevant today than ever before. But never mind the message because you can DANCE your butt off to this record. The band knows how to lock into a propulsive groove and then ride it as far as it will take them. The guitar playing is groundbreaking in it's unconventional style. Call it non-riffs or anti-riffs. You get just enough shards of feedback to satisfy your need for riffage, no more-no less. In many ways GOF remind me of a white post-punk version of Chic. All the instruments, guitar, bass, drums, and even vocal are in service of the groove. In addition, there is not a weak cut on the album. If you haven't heard this record, you are in for a treat. Do whatever you have to do to get it now!

nothing else like it, June 8, 2000
Abrasive but pristinely focused, sense of humor and severity, imaginative, exciting, danceable... uh... the list could go on and on. This is a classic album that took the anger of punk and honed it, without sacrificing intense vitality and upsetting-of-conventions (musically and otherwise). Brilliant music. This is too wordy for it all. Just seek it out.

The One, The Only, November 17, 2005
There are a whole lot of Gang of Four imitators out there today. Some are good (Franz Ferdinand, Bloc Party). Others are not so good. Anyway, you should know the original material. Gang of Four are one of the most instantly appealing groups I have ever heard. Their incredible beats and melodies almost overshadow their Marxist agenda. This is the ultimate political rock landmark, rivaled only truly by the MC5's Kick Out the Jams. You will love this. Guaranteed.

Entertaining, July 29, 2005
What many seem to miss when assessing the Gang of Four's seminal "Entertainment!"is that beyond all its influence and overt politics at its heart there's a very entertaining piece of rock n'roll and not a lumpen record to revere from the distance without playing regularly. "Entertainment!"is simply as exciting as rock gets and one blast of it could galvanize a zombie.

Best CD Ever, July 13, 2005
I own over 2,000 CD's. This is my favorite. If your looking for something musically complex and sung with all the notes hit right you are in the wrong place, in fact a 6 year old could probably play all the musical parts on this CD. That is not the point and frankly I hate music that is technically performed. That said the combination of simple funk, punk guitar structures and shouted, spoken vocals is innovative in its own way and gives the music an unmatched power. Matching the punk, funk music with the most intellegent lyrics ever written makes this something the masses will never enjoy, but to me it is utterly magical. Every song jumps off the disc and fills you with a sense of power as you dance to the chaos of the world that they articulate with humor and insight. The ultimate Entertainment!!!

England's Screaming...........77-82 was the best, June 14, 2005
One of the sure fire ways to judge a so-called 'punk' record from the late 70's/early 80's is staying power - does it sound dated & stale? Does it still have appeal & relevance, both lyrically and musically? In my opinion there are many releases from the UK in the late 70's that of stood the test of time; London Calling, Setting Sons, Machine Gun Etiquette, Rattus Norvegicus, Never Mind the Bollocks, etc. This is one for the ages, GOF never reached the summit again, this was their debut and clearly the finest release in their up & down career. All the right ingredients crystallize, pungent biting lyrics with acute social commentary (that ironically still apply today) incredible muscianship, uptempos, clever vocal wordplay, it's all here, obviously, this is one of the greatest albums ever made. I've owned it for 20+ years and still slap the vinyl on at least when I need to feel charged up about something that sticks in my craw. Indispensable. (Essence Rare & Damaged Goods will have you boppin')
