please ignore the review below. not only he doesnt know about good music, hes only interested in promoting himself. this cd is something which is quite rare these days - a rendition of 1930-1950 standards that manages to be fresh, alive and interesting as if they were created not long ago. Gayle's style is obviously influenced by both monk and cecil taylor. it has the sense of surprise and the excellent use of time like monk's work, and also some of the fire, percussiveness and quick runs that cecil taylor likes to use. still, the melody is not completely distorted - there is enough of it for more straightforward tastes to enjoy. in short, a good cd. it is not as far out as most of his early work though. check out gayle's main cd's too, some are great. (he usually plays the tenor sax - the bass clarinet and the piano are second instruments).
