Reader Reviews
I first have to agree with a few things already pointed out by other reviewers. This is definitely more song driven than atmospheric compared to "Heaven Up Here", but it's definitely not without it's atmospheric effect, especially on "Pictures on My Wall". There's also no filler material in here, every song seems to flow into the other without interrupting the mood. And, someone else had pointed out Sergeant's guitar playing here compared to other albums... definitely not as prominent as on later albums, but the sound is still distinct. But I'd have to disagree with another reviewer on the band's name... I think their name's kinda cool!! It may seem strange or silly or whatever people think (people digging thru my cd collection always say "Echo in the Bunnymen??" with a strange tone to their voice & confused look on their face, haha)... BUT it's memorable. The first I had heard of early Bunnymen was from "Songs to Learn & Sing", & eventually got around to hearing the other albums over time. "Best of" or "Greatest Hits" or whatever else you call them compilations are great to start off with, but always keep in mind that how do you know what else you're missing unless you hear the rest of? I didn't get to hear this debut for a while though, I sorta went backwards in the Bunnymen anthology. I still haven't concluded which album is my absolute favorite, but this is certainly a strong debut. Compared to their other albums, it's not as dark & moody as 'Heaven Up Here' or 'Porcupine', but also not as, I guess "happy" as the self-titled album, it maintains a steady melancholic feel. I can't even really pin-point my "favorite" song on here, except for the fact that I had heard "Rescue" way before hearing the rest of the album... thanks to the catchy guitar riff. "Monkeys" & "All that Jazz" are also a couple of the catchier tunes. If I were to suggest which Bunnymen album to start with, that would be tough to answer... I still say that compilations are the easiest to start with & then go from there. But then again, if you even know who they are, you probably have "Songs" to begin with... so then get this!
