Along with UARM, I consider this Roger's greatest solo album, and it works so well because it's a de facto Who album. Though there are other musicians present on the album, the fact remains that all three of the other bandmembers played on these tracks, even contributing backing vocals on a couple of tracks (such as "My Time Is Gonna Come"). Even his biggest solo hit, "Free Me," came from this album; it reached #20. It's sad how most of Roger's solo career was a joke, since he made horrible decisions about which material to record and with whom to work, coupled with how he didn't seem to be able to find a unique voice for himself as a solo artist. He needed the other guys in the band to be worth anything musically, and here it shines through brilliantly. Consequently, this is the soundtrack to the movie of the same name; it's said that Roger's performance as John McVicar is also his greatest acting role. The songs are great, the music is loud, hard, and rocking, Roger's vocals are top-notch, it features his famous primal screams, along with softer songs like "Without Your Love," it tells the real-life story of bank robber John McVicar very well (McVicar himself co-wrote the screenplay), and there is not a dull moment or throwaway song to be found anywhere. Right from the angry nasty energy of "Bitter and Twisted" all of the way through to the final crescendos of "McVicar," it majorly cooks.
I have worn out 2 copy's of this album on vinyl. Now it's finally out on CD.This is one of Roger Daltrey's best solo albums out there.Although I liked the movie of it.And Roger Daltrey does a good job playing the Bank Robber John McVicar. The soundtrack is amazing. My favorite songs are 'Free Me','My Time Is Gonna Come', and many others too.I've been a Who fan for a long time. And 'McVicar' is one of the best Who albums I've listened to.
I've listened to this recording on a cassette made from vinyl in 1985. McVicar is one of the classic Daltry albums that has more of a "WHO" flavor than any his albums that proceeded it. Anyone who has any type of WHO collection should add this IMMEDIATELY.
I have worn out 2 records and several cassette tapes of this recording in the last 20 years and it is great to find it in CD format. This is one impressive rock-n-roll powerhouse and a must-own for any Who fan (and that I am). The muscular leader of the Who belts out ferocious rockers as well as mellow ballads on this one. His voice has never been better. The vocals on Free Me will part your hair while the delivery of the subtle Without Your Love will sooth your soul. The songs are just flat-out good. You will find it hard to get this one out of the player. Buy it and enjoy.
A rocker's collectable (tranquill/meditative enhancement) with rare instrumentals and mind twisting lyrics; "Free Me, My Time is Gonna Come, & Bitter Twisted" stimulates me when I need the unconventional, sentient, and objective realms for day-to-day life. I found the album at a garage sale and bought a turn-table just to play it. Now that it's a CD I ought to buy a car to equalize its "radicalness" (justify/share it) & get it blasting on the road, maybe the prototype RX8 would get it the perfect respect. For now I'll have to settle on my vintage '83 RX7. I believe this to be the essential Roger Daltrey. While the movie didn't phase me the soundtrack has altered my standard of music since I first heard these tunes. But, find out for yourself! Since then Cult has been the lone artist(s) that has sustained my modern appetite for meaninful-purposeful rock generated by this solo record where Roger D. stands way above his contemporaries. If you liked 'Tommy & {Bowie's} The Man Who Fell to Earth' then you must own this little known CD (review the movie) & if you like the 'Who' & classical rockers like Floyd & Clapton-then Right on! HONESTLY it single handedly changed my taste & need for lyrical rock-n-roll, for blaring vocals, rhythms & percussions taking one through raging peaks & provocative troughs. "Buy IT, Play IT & Guard IT" (Vini, Vidi, Veci)
This is possibly the best solo album that Roger Daltrey has done so far. His strong voice, intensity and nuances are all there. Still holds up as a great album some 20 years after its release.
