I had never heard of Howie Day at all until one day while browsing other users "Listmania" lists, I came upon his album and listened to the sound clips. I immediately ordered the CD. It arrived at my house three days later and I have had it on repeat ever since. I absolutely fell in love with this album.ALL of the songs on the CD are great, listen to the whole thing through. Howie has an amazing voice that belies his young age--and he puts that powerful attribute to use on this album. The album is mostly acoustic-guitar based, which is perfect if you are a fan of acoustic-guitar based artists. If you like John Mayer you will probably love this album--it is similar to JM's "Room for Squares" but I think Howie is a stronger songwriter, and the general tone of the album is a bit more rock than pop (compared to Mayer). If you like John Mayer, Jack Johnson, Vertical Horizon, U2, or Ben Harper, definetely give this album a try!I have heard that he is good live, I wish Howie was touring by himself and hitting tons of cities because I would love to hear him in concert. I can't wait for his next CD and also hope that he releases a live album for those of us who can't make it to his concerts. Overall an awesome album from an amazing young talented singer and songwriter. I wonder what he will come up with next. He is going to be huge!
This is an amazing cd. Howie Day has the poise and true talent that can never truly compare to others. I wish his new cd was better. It might be the most popular on this site, but listen to Australia. He doesn't have a full band and there's much more emotion. THE "SHE SAYS" ON THIS CD IS ACOUSTIC AND 20 TIMES BETTER. There's just so much feeling in his voice that it's almost like he's playing a private concert for you. Other highlights on this CD, besides "She Says," include: "Sorry So Sorry", "Ghost", "More You Understand", "Morning After", and "Disco". If you like this cd, get the Madrigals EP or in the opposite order. Howie Day is definitely a great singer-songwriter. His new CD does not do justice to his raw talent, so go for his older stuff if you've never heard him before.
I too was blown away by Howie's one man bandness at a Tori Amos show. Of all the singer/songwriters whose emergence have coincided with the newly refound brilliance of Nick Drake, Howie is the only one that doesn't come off as taking himself too seriously. His talent is unintentional and does not seem to be scripted. Plus he doesn't seem to be permanently stoned...
The cold stung right through my jeans, leaving a layer of frost across my butt that served to remind me of just how cold I really was. Ice scrapings shot at my seat on the bleachers, as I watched the groups of children skate with their instructors. I was bored and eager to leave the skating rink that had left my fingers numb and toes tingly. That was when I found Australia in my bag. I had never heard of Howie Day before, but his CD Australia was in my walk-man, having been left there by my friend taking the skating lessons. It was holding on track 9, the song Morning After. Suddenly I'm in a room, just barely lit by the refracting light that bounces and curves along the wall. I lay in a bed with white sheets pulled to my chest, rising and falling with constant bursts of warm air, that lift from the beach below and blow in through the open balcony where a silent figure stands, painted with a tepid glow of sun light. I hear serene echoes of acoustic guitar in the distance and begin to close my eyes. I was shivering again and could feel the pins and needles in my toes. I remembered ice and the poorly lit arena and then I was there, back on the frosty bleachers, waiting for the lessons to finish. Boredom once again swept over me. At least I had had an escape for a little while, my own morning after.
I bought this album about a year ago and I still can't get enough of it. I'll go out and buy other cds, listen to them for a few weeks and get over them, but "Australia" always works it's way back into the CD player.Being in Australia, I have had to import all of Howie's material from the US because he is basically unknown here. It's a shame because I can see Howie being well received in Australia - especially with the live shows. I have never had the privilage of seeing Howie live, but his looping skills are absolutely amazing! My fave track on the album is probably Disco - an emotionally haunting, yet great song. All you Aussies - check Howie out. You'll be very surprised
Australia is simply a masterful piece of work - by far my favorite cd ever. There are only a handful of cds that I would classify as near-perfect from start to finish, and Australia stands strong in those elite ranks. Although the album flows smoothly as a single, unified piece of work, each song still has its own unique appeal. As soon as I heard "Sorry, So Sorry," the first song on the album, I was immediately entranced by Howie's voice and the mysterious nature of the music conveyed by the haunting melodies. Every song is beautiful and breathtaking (extremely trite, but in this case, actually true). Definitely the best CD purchase I've ever made - it never ceases to intrigue me, and it always finds its way into my stereo. After hearing this CD, I couldn't help but fall in love with Howie Day.
