It's nice to finally be able to hear Dave Davies' "Chosen People" after the album being out of print for two decades. It is certainly more accessible than his first two solo efforts, which sometimes buried great songs in murky, plodding production. For "Chosen People" Dave brought in a full backing band instead of playing everything himself in endless overdubs, and the result is a tighter, crisper, and far more lively sound. Dave also turns in some great vocals, especially on the haunting "True Story" ("Are you talking to me?"). There's a good mix of rockers and ballads, but not much of the heavy metal that characterized his previous albums. The songwriting here is fairly solid (but not as consistently good as the high water mark he would hit on his next album, "BUG"). And as always, Dave's heavy-handed peace-and-love preaching is leavened with enough mysticism and UFO lore to keep things interesting! Overall, this is a good-but-not-great set sure to please diehard Dave fans, and probably inconsequential to anyone else. Go for "BUG" first.
