About Now
Reader Reviews The most important aspect of Derrick Carter's new mix "About Now" is that it reminds house fans that this music is very black music. From the "Excerpt from the Autobiography of Ms. Jane Pittman" to the rhyming couplets on "Girly Soully," Carter uses odd, seemingly out of place themes of slavery to evoke a free your (...) from the wall response. At the same time, Mr. Carter seems to be attacking some recent perceptions of dance music. Let's face it, a lot of trance DJs are feeling the backlash of that sorry genre and calling their stuff progressive house all the sudden. Carter has never fronted. He is the essence of house music, plain and simple. Bass is practically absent throughout the first five or six tracks as Carter seeks to showcase the rich, jazzy subtleties of these tunes. Your average Digweed fan may not dig this, but for anyone who appreciates house music as a whole and not only it's most recent incarnations, pick this up. You'll be reminded that house music can be classy.
