Prime Cuts: Anywhere But Here, You Still Do That to Me, Miss Me Baby

Trials are the best disciplinarians: they have a way of forcing us to reassess our priorities and wants. After going through a divorce and a time when he almost lost his voice, Chris Cagle is back with album number three under the Capitol Nashville imprint. Partnering with new producer Rob Wright, this lanky Texan promises that this is going to be his best CD. That claim, though propitious, does not truly hold water. Not that this is a ropey attempt, but many of these tracks (save the ballads) do not move beyond the nondescript level. They are just re-harsh southern rock ditties covering topics well within the conservative confines of contemporary country music's canon. Despite the contributions from Nashville's writing elite such as Troy Verges, Tom Shapiro, Monty Powell, Chris Lindsay, Brett James among others, they all sound like obligatory composition written to fill their monthly scribal quota.

Nevertheless, the ballads are the high point here: best of which is "Anywhere But Here." With mournful sounding fiddles sharing the remorse of a broken hearted Cagle, "Anywhere But Here" is an excellent modern day drinking number pronto. Also, quite good is the leadoff single "Miss Me Baby," which finds Cagle in his sentimental best as he swoons with an affectionate élan: "Miss me baby/And when you start to sing along/Think about all the times that we danced/In moonlight to it all night long, oh/Then miss me baby." Without any romantic reticence, the power ballad "I Was Made for You" is the perfect radio candy. However, the lyrics are quite banal and cliché: "like the glass that holds the wine/the sunset in the western skies/like the love there in your eyes." Written by ace writers Chris Lindsay and Brett James, they have written perhaps too many love songs that to them this is just another song to bring in the bucks.

In terms of the uptempoes, "You Still Do That to Me" is a tad above average. With its Tropicana and hula beads feel, the breezy Kenny Chesney-like "You Still Do That to Me" is an amorous ode to never changing marital love. However, the rest of them have such a commercial sheen that Chris Cagle seem to loose his identity in these shoddily written numbers. Album opener "You Might Just Want to Think About It" is a forgettable politically correct tune about religious freedom, patriotism and moral values---all of which are admirable qualities to think about. But this rockish Montgomery Gentry outtake is just so ersatz that makes you want to press the skip button. The same can be said about "Hey Y'all." As shallow as the title is, so is the song. Perhaps a crowd pleaser that could work well in a concert, "Hey Y'all" falls flat on record. Just because the word "cowboy" is name dropped in Bon Jovi's 80s rock "Wanted: Dead or Alive," it does not make this a country song. This is just grating at best.

With a likeable (if not a tad ordinary) baritone and an engaging personality, Chris Cagle deserves better. A couple of advice: drop those Nashville writers (they have reserved their best for the McGraws and the Hills) and stop indulging in self-penned songs. Rather, garner songs from more quality writers (such as Dean Dillon, Skip Ewing, Angela Kaset and Paul Overstreet). Here's hoping album number 4 will be anything but this.

Some of his best vocals, February 20, 2006
Reviewer:Vicki "Country Music Lover" (Colorado) - See all my reviews
This album is great! The ballads are worth the price alone. The song "You Might want to think about it" and "Hey Ya'll" are just plain fun. Cagle does a supurb job with Bon Jovi's "Wanted". I love Bon Jovi too but I like Cagles version better. Bon Jovi himself has praised Cagle for it.
It's a fun album to listen to and Cagles vocals are at their best yet. He has learned how to use his vocals even better (if thats possible) during his forced rest.
Great Album!!

Don't bother with this one. If there's a particular track you like, buy it for 99 cents online somewhere because the rest of the CD certainly isn't worth the other fourteen bucks. Plus with the incredibly aggravating copy protection it's just about useless...

Amazon would be well advised to list which CDs have this protection, becuase I'm sure I'll never knowingly buy another CD that has it, and it makes for a very dissatisfying purchasing experience.

Yes the Rocker Chick bought a country cd. Only because "miss me baby" to me is an amazing song! So i got the cd and come to find out there are some really good songs, but not enough to have me hooked. An "ok" cd but a sure reminder that rock is the only way to go!! Does anyone agree?

The c.d. would be well worth the money if not for the copyright protection. The last c.d. I bought that had the much hated protection would not play in my Chevy Colorado c.d. player. And I might add, the stereo system was standard, I did not take out the system and upgrade. Now, why, pray tell, would I buy a c.d. that may or may not play in my vehicle? The last c.d. (Joss Stone) played fine in the Toyota Tundra but it sounded like a scratchy 45 in the Colorado. It popped, skipped, and basically sounded terrible. While I understand (I guess) the rational behind copyright protection I do not understand why anyone would think that the average person would spend money on a c.d. and hope against hope that it would play. Sorry Mr. Cagle, I would like to purchase the c.d. but not when the chances of it playing are slim to none.
