Reader Reviews The appeal of Poland's Basia for her fans is that she embodies some of the best features of pop music..its hummability and tunefulness...without succumbing very often to its worst traits..banality and a short shelf life. Ms. Trzetrzelewska (that's why she doesn't use the last name..) combines pop music with a jazz sensibility and a dash of Brazilian influence to create a sound that's unique. Whether you love her or hate her depends in large part on your ability to grow accustomed to her slight (it's not thick) accent and your taste for world music touches. BEST TRACKS: The bouncy "Promises" calls for an end to extravagant claims for the future in favour of love in the here and now (see if you don't find its "go and ask anybody" hook lodged in your head), "Freeze Thaw" is irritation with an inconstant lover,("When you change your tune with every mood, What am I to do with you?"), "How Dare You" is a caution to a man who's stopped wooing now that he "has" her (besides a bouncy synth rhythm, it features a nice jazzy piano/organ interlude), and the telegraphic synth bassline that propels "Run for Cover"'s stand-by-your-man sentiment. (The keyboard/vocal duet on "down down down" at the coda is a fantastic wrapup..and there's a nice rhythmic piano break as well...) LOW POINTS: "From Now On"'s repetition of "I don't mind" tends to grate a bit after awhile. "Astrud" is a tribute to her influence Astrud Gilberto, but for me it doesn't acquit itself as well as much of the other material. BOTTOM LINE: Basia is very much a "love her or hate her" proposition. You'll probably enjoy her if you liked Paul Simon's "Rhythm of the Saints" CD and if you like the music of Astrud Gilberto and Stan Getz. If you do not, you'll probably not care for Basia either. Listen to the samples...if you're still intrigued, drop your $2 and get it used. 3 1/2 stars
