This was one of THE jams of 2001. Basement Jaxx have outdone themselves with this slammin slice of housed-up electronica. It's not to late to discover this dance anthem. Get into the groove with Basement Jaxx now!
Being a DJ, you get an ear for this kind of thing. Bongoloid will tear the crap out of a bad speaker system. It will sound distorted and bad. You get this thing going on a full-room DJ setup that was designed for clubs and whatnot... only then do you realise the greatness that is this tune.Truely a great song. The Romeo Club mix is a pretty standard affair (1 minute intro, 1 minute outro, bits extended), the radio edit is standard as well, with some clever mixing, and the last track... i'm thinking maybe it was a bunch of intro's for the radio edit that they had worked out? I'm not sure.Either way. Get it. Bongoloid is worth the money alone if you have speakers that can handle it.
i just have a few words to say about this sinlge.... BUY IT!!!! yes, the b-sides aren't that great, but a seven minute version of Romeo is! and i don't care what she says... i have one response "My dear, I can't get enough". and yes, i'm neurotic like a yo yo.
My single is as follows: 1) Romeo (radio edit), 2) Bongoloid, 3) Camberwell Skies (demo mix), 4) Romeo (club mix), 5) Romeo (beats mix). I bought this single because I was completely impressed with Basement Jaxx's album, "Rooty." The single is good because the radio edit has a smooth beats intro different from the album version's intro. Bongoloid alone is reason enough to buy this single. What an amazing b-side! Huge bass and beats, almost Latin or dance hall-style. Great dance tune with lots of hooks, including jamaican rap. It's a shock this one didn't make it on the album; it's worthy of being its own single. Camberwell Skies is an ambient demo, and interesting enough. My only complaint is all three Romeo mixes, done by the Jaxx themselves, don't stray too far from the original. The Club Mix just layers a few more beats on, and a small additional instrumental section towards the end. The beats mix is pretty minimal- getting louder then backing off, getting loud again and backing off; working with just a few beats, the line "you used to be my romeo," and "woah oh ey." So maybe the Jaxx should have had someone else mix Romeo for the single, but Bongoloid makes up for it, and Camberwell Skies is decent, too.
Romeo is the first of many good track son their new album Rooty. Romeo has a radio-friendly sound to it, that draws you from the start and doesn't let you go until you are hooked. Take this as a postive start for their album, so if you like this you will love their new album
