Dirt
Reader Reviews Dirt is, without a doubt, my favorite grunge album -- even better than Nirvana's Nevermind. And unlike Nevermind, it's far more likely to appeal to people like me who also enjoy 70s and 80s hard rock and metal from bands like Rush, Queensryche, Guns N' Roses, Black Sabbath, and Judas Priest. The album is dark, but this definitely does not make it difficult to listen to. You can just taste the agony in Layne Staley's voice as he sings about the horrors of drug addiction. This is made truly haunting by the fact that Staley later died of his addiction and was not found until two weeks after his death. Jerry Cantrell's guitar goes perfectly with Staley's tormented voice. Despite the darkness, however, the album has never made me felt depressed or down, and I must have listened to it in its entirety dozens of times over the years. Every single song on this album is a classic in every sense of the word. There is not even a second's worth of filler. Each and every one, (except possibly "Intro (Dream Sequence)" also known as "Iron Gland,") sounds great all by itself, but the album works even better as a whole. Dirt is a masterpiece, and is in my opinion the best album of the 1990's. No collection of hard rock, heavy metal, or grunge can ever be complete without it. R.I.P., Layne.
